MOK’s first ever Tanzanian coffee and with good reason. For this lot we partnered up with importer This Side Up from The Netherlands. Coffee export in Tanzania is mainly authorized through auction, but sadly they don’t differentiate between higher and lower quality lots. So, the Amkeni Coffee Group is a collective of 45 smallholder farmers near Mwika, a small village on the eastern side of Mount Kilimanjaro near the Kenyan border. Coffee is grown and processed at 1600 to 1750 masl. However, after winning several championships thanks to their pursuit of quality, the lack of fair compensation that met their efforts and quality seriously discouraged them to go on cultivating coffee. Through the efforts of This Side Up and their local exporting partner Wanza in Tanzania, we were able to buy this lot and pay a fair price to the farmers and other parties involved.
