But in Southwest Ethiopia, in the Gedeo zone, most coffees are grown in the yards of family homes, intercropped with other crops that the family relies on. Within Gedeb, Chelebesa accounts for most of the coffee grown in the area. Sitting at an altitude between 1925 and 2110 masl, the coffee is collectively produced by 170 farmers in the locality. On average, each farmer owns between half a hectare and two hectares, with the combined coffee farming land measuring 1240 hectares. The washing station is situated less than an hour away to save farmers the trouble of transporting the cherries across long distances.
