These smallholders practice intercropping usually with traditional food crops such as banana trees, and other shade trees. Intercropping is helpful for a multitude of reasons. Trees provide relatively consistent shade and temperature, giving coffee cherries more time to mature and develop more flavour. Intercropping is also an added layer of protection against plant diseases.
